The Ruskin Colony acquired land in the area during the late 1800s. The community included homes, mills, a print shop, a bakery, a school and other businesses. The historic Commonwealth House later became connected with Ruskin Cave College, and the wider property went through several chapters as a school, resort, campground and gathering place.
